A Journey Rooted in Heritage and Purpose
From Fouta Djallon to Global Food Systems — and Back to the Roots
My name is Mamadou B., Though I was not born in Fouta Djallon, both of my parents come from this beautiful mountainous heartland of Guinea, West Africa. I spent many school vacations and adult years there, immersed in the countryside lifestyle and the deep-rooted traditions surrounding fonio, the ancient grain that has nourished generations.
Fouta Djallon is not only my ancestral home, but also the epicenter of global fonio production. This highland region produces the vast majority of Guinea’s fonio, and according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2022), Guinea is responsible for nearly 75% of the world’s total fonio supply. It is here, in the fields and hills of Fouta Djallon, that the legacy of fonio farming has been carefully preserved by generations of smallholder farmers.
A Life in Natural Foods and Global Operations
My journey took me from Guinea to France for education, and later to the United States, where I spent more than a decade working within the natural foods retail industry. During that time, I held roles across sourcing, supply chain operations, cost and margin oversight, inventory management, and distribution systems.
Working closely with suppliers and supporting operational performance across large retail networks shaped my belief that food systems can be both efficient and ethical. That experience deepened my commitment to building transparent, disciplined supply chains that honor farmers while meeting modern quality standards..
A Calling to Do More
I was also deeply influenced by initiatives focused on empowering small-scale producers through microcredit and income-generating opportunities. Seeing how access to capital and fair market participation can transform communities strengthened my commitment to ethical sourcing and community-based trade.
Launching Nafajama
Inspired by these experiences, I made the bold decision to step away from corporate life and create Nafajama.
This company is more than a business. It is a bridge between cultures, a tribute to heritage, and a commitment to ethical trade and premium quality.
Today, I am proud to partner directly with fonio farmers in Guinea, especially those in Fouta Djallon, ensuring their knowledge, labor, and stories are respected and valued. Every bag of fonio we share with the world helps create sustainable jobs, preserve tradition, and promote dignity through trade.
If you have ever believed that food can be a force for good, you are already part of this journey. Thank you for being here.
Nafajama was founded to let the grain, the farmers, and the heritage speak for themselves.
